I had a great time leading a three-hour workshop at the Community Media Workshop’s Making Media Connections conference. Here’s the Powerpoint from “Packing a Punch with WordPress.” The workshop was pretty hands on, and we mostly looked at things together on the Internet, but the presentation includes some useful lists such as:
- What to look for when evaluating WordPress themes
- What to look for when choosing WordPress plugins
- WordPress.com versus self-hosted WordPress
- My 10 Things to Ask your WordPress Developer For Small Advice post

Note: I removed some of the slides that are for live presentation purposes (agenda, guidelines, discussion questions).
Also, let me say how much I enjoyed moderating the panel of tech leads from Obama for America campaign, who came to talk about the lessons learned from creating large-scale data management tools and web-based resources for the Obama. They are my kind of techies — funny, smart, and with great perspective on how technology and data are not there for their own sake, but to support organizational goals.
